The Nine Commandments

September 12, 2025 • Jack McIntosh

Have you ever heard of the nine commandments? Most Christians have not. And yet a large number of Christians subscribe only to 9 of the 10 Commandments. What is curious is that the only one of the 10 commandments that they say is no longer applicable is the only one of the Commandments that begins with the word remember!

It goes like this: “Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy.” It is the 4th commandment of the 10. It is the only commandment that tells us who gave us the law. It calls the Sabbath “the Sabbath of the Lord thy God.” It tells us that the reason we worship God is because he is the Creator.

Notice the language of the 4th commandment: “For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth the sea and all that in them is and rested on the 7th day.” It is also the only commandment that tells us that God not only rested on the Sabbath, but that He blessed it and sanctified it, meaning He made it holy (Gen 2:1-3, Exod 20:8-11). There is no record of God resting on Sunday the first day of the week. There is no record in the Bible that he blessed Sunday. And there is no record in the Bible that he made Sunday the first day of the week, holy.

Given these Biblical facts, why do most Christians worship on Sunday? The reason usually given, Is that Jesus resurrected on the first day of the week. The problem with that reasoning is that there is no commandment to worship on Sunday the first day of the week in honor of the resurrection. And in the absence of such a commandment, the Sabbath commandment stands. This begs a more basic question, and that is, why do we worship God? The Bible is very clear: We worship God because He is the Creator. Notice Psalms 95:6 “Oh come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker”. In Chapter 4 of the Book of Revelation, we find the 24 elders worshiping God, and they give a reason for such worship in verse 11: “For You have created all things.”
Now the one who gave the 10 commandments to Israel is Jesus.

John-1In the New Testament, John chapter one and Hebrews chapter one both make it clear that Jesus is the Creator, and He made the Sabbath at the end of the creation week, which is why he said: “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” Now the Sabbath is a day and if he is lord of the Sabbath day, then the 7th day Sabbath is the Lord’s day, not Sunday, as most Christians claim.

Actually, the 4th commandment commands us to work on Sunday the first day of the week. Notice again the language: “Six days shalt thou labor and do all thy work, but the 7th day is the Sabbath of the Lord Your God.” The first day of the week is one of the six that God said we should work on. Instead Christians have taken a common work day and made it a rest day similar to the Bible Sabbath… the 7th day of the week. Similarly, they have taken the Bible Sabbath the 7th day and made it a common day of work.

How about you? Are you resting on the 7th day Sabbath, the day that we call Saturday, which the Lord blessed and sanctified, instead of the first day of the week which is a common working day? I hope that this has convinced you to be obedient to this Sabbath commandment and not just 9 of them. Remember what Jesus said: “If you love me, keep my commandments.” John 14 15 .
