A Biblical Perspective on Health and Wellness
Throughout the Bible, the human body is depicted as a sacred dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. The Apostle Paul affirms this in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20:
“Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit… and you are not your own? For you were bought with a price, therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
This powerful statement underscores the importance of honoring God through our physical well-being. The Scriptures provide a comprehensive guide to maintaining our health in a way that aligns with divine principles.
Nourishment and Moderation
Paul further emphasizes in 1 Corinthians 10:31: “Whether therefore you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” Our dietary choices should reflect God’s character of love and care, nourishing our bodies rather than indulging in excess.
Ecclesiastes 10:17 pronounces a blessing on those who eat for strength and not for indulgence. Overeating or unnecessary snacking can be viewed as a form of excess that hinders our physical and spiritual well-being. Similarly, Galatians 5:22 identifies temperance (self-control) as a fruit of the Spirit, guiding us to practice moderation in all lawful things and complete abstinence from harmful substances.
A Balanced Lifestyle
Romans 12:1-2 calls believers to present their bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God—a form of spiritual worship. Our lifestyle choices, including our diet and physical activities, should be an act of worship to our Creator.
Genesis 1:29 provides the original diet given to humanity in the Garden of Eden, consisting of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains. Before sin entered the world, there was no death, and thus no need to consume animals.
However, after sin, Genesis 3:19 states: “In the sweat of your brow, you shall eat bread.” This implies that physical activity was designed to be balanced with food intake, ensuring energy expenditure aligns with energy consumption.
Essential Elements for Health
The Bible also highlights other key factors essential for maintaining health:
-
Hydration
Isaiah 44:12 illustrates the effects of dehydration: "He drinks no water and grows faint." Proper water intake is crucial for sustaining energy levels and overall bodily functions.
-
Sunlight
Malachi 4:2 speaks of the "Sun of Righteousness" bringing healing. Modern science confirms that exposure to sunlight aids in circadian rhythm regulation and provides numerous health benefits, including Vitamin D synthesis.
-
Breath of Life
Genesis 2:7 reminds us that "God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life." Deep breathing and exposure to fresh air invigorate the body, supplying oxygen necessary for mitochondrial energy production.
-
Rest
Jesus invites us in Matthew 11:28: "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Quality sleep is vital for physical restoration, brain function, and overall well-being, with at least 7-8 hours per night recommended.
-
Trust in God
Proverbs 3:5-6 advises us to "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding." Faith and trust in God lead to peace of mind, reducing stress and fostering a sense of well-being.
NEWSTART: A Biblical Health Framework
These biblical principles are encapsulated in the health acronym NEWSTART, originally developed by the Weimar Institute in California:
- N – Nutrition
- E – Exercise
- W – Water
- S – Sunlight
- T – Temperance (Self-Control)
- A – Air (Fresh Oxygen)
- R – Rest
- T – Trust in Divine Power
As a health educator affiliated with the Newstart program at Weimar Institute, I introduced an additional key element: A for Attitude. This concept is based on principles found in The Ministry of Healing (1903), particularly on page 281:
“Gratitude, rejoicing, benevolence, and trust in God’s love and care—these are health’s greatest safeguards.”
While physical health is essential, a positive attitude rooted in faith, gratitude, and benevolence plays a preventive role in well-being. Isaiah 58:6-8 highlights the significance of a compassionate and selfless spirit as a divine prescription for healthful living.
A Holistic Approach to Health
By integrating these biblical principles into daily life, we align our bodies, minds, and spirits with God’s design for holistic wellness. May you be blessed as you embrace these therapeutic and preventive modalities, honoring your body as the sacred temple of the Holy Spirit.
